Causes of Indigestion
As we eat food there are times when indigestion can resut from some mistake or ignorant act. It is therefore very important to know from where the issue stemmed. As we know, there are ineffeciencies that can result from this discomfort, so it good to be able to handle it promptly.
In his book, Abundant Health, Julius Gilbert White lists several special causes of indigestion (pp. 91-99)
- Eating too fast. Foods needs to be mixed with saliva.
- Overeating. This applies even to good food.
- Meals too close together. For most people, 4 or 5 hours between meals is needed.
- Eating between meals. This weakens the stomach.
- Eating a large evening meal or late at night. Digestion should be nearly finished before retiring.
- Eating when tired, and especially when exhuasted.
- Loss of sleep. Nervous. Mental Depression.
- Eating unripe fruit, spoiled fruit, or condiments.
- Eating Bread that was not well baked. If the inside can be squeezed into a dough, do not eat it.
- Eating yeast bread which is not 24 hours old.
- Eating vinegar, fried foods, or complex mixtures.
- Eating vegetables and most fruits at the same meal.
- Eating milk and sugar together as in ice cream. This is because sugar ferments quickly, yet its enfolded in the milk that digests slowly.
- Eating Too Much Liquid Food
- Eating sugar, tea, coffee, cocoa liquor, etc
- Drinking with meals. This dilutes stomach juices.
- Chewing gum, drinking soft drinks, eating demineralized food or food cooked in aluminum utensils.
A simple solution is here given that can help in some cases from the author of Counsels on Diets & Foods:
"I will tell you a little about my experience with charcoal as a remedy. For some forms of indigestion, it is more efficacious than drugs. A little olive oil into which some of this powder has been stirred tends to cleanse and heal. I find it is excellent. Pulverized charcoal from eucalyptus wood we have used freely in cases of inflammation...." { 2SM 298.5}
